The Portico: an illustration of a Roman villa portico with Corinthian columns and a mosaic floor, opening onto a garden walk to a small temple
The Portico
A Roman villa · 1st century AD

Shade, Order and a Garden Shrine

For wealthy Romans of the late Republic and early Empire, the villa was a retreat from the city: a country house where a senator could read, write, receive friends and walk in the shade. Its porticoes, covered walks lined with columns, linked house and garden and gave shelter from the sun and the rain.

The letters of Pliny the Younger, written around AD 100, describe such places in loving detail. At his Tuscan villa a portico looked out over a terrace laid out in beds edged with box, and box shrubs were clipped into the shapes of animals. In another letter he asks his architect to rebuild an old temple of Ceres on his estate and to add a portico beside it for the crowds who came to her festival. Gardens, columns and shrines belonged together.

The piece

The picture stands us in the shade of the portico and lets the garden pull us forward. The mosaic at our feet, a great rosette framed by waves and meanders, sets the colors: lapis blue and terracotta on cream. The gravel walk then leads straight between the hedges and the cypresses to the bright temple steps, the only thing in the picture that faces us head on. Roses and oleander soften the edges, and the cool blue of the ceiling answers the sky.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
