A Roman legion carried many standards, and each had its own bearer. The aquilifer held the eagle, the sacred emblem of the whole legion. Each century followed its signum, a pole decorated with discs, crescents, wreaths and sometimes an open hand at the top, carried by a signifer. The vexillarius bore the vexillum, a square cloth banner hung from a crossbar, which marked cavalry units and detachments. Under the emperors an imaginifer also carried a portrait of the emperor.
These men were more than flag carriers. In battle the standards showed where each unit stood and where it was going, and soldiers were trained to follow their own. Vegetius says the signifers also kept the soldiers' savings, and so were chosen for honesty and literacy as well as courage. Monuments such as Trajan's Column show standard-bearers wearing animal skins over their helmets. Exactly who wore which pelt is not settled, and the meaning of the open hand is still debated; it may have stood for loyalty or an oath.
The painting is a group portrait. The three men stand shoulder to shoulder in a misty meadow at first light, the fog rising to their knees. The eagle-bearer stands at the center, a lion's head over his helmet and the gilded eagle high above him. To the left, the signifer holds his tall standard with its open hand, crescents and discs. To the right, the third bearer carries the red vexillum. Each has a small round shield and a sword at his belt. Behind them, the legion fades into the mist.
