Hadrian's Wall was begun around AD 122, after the emperor Hadrian visited Britain. It ran about eighty Roman miles, some seventy-three modern miles, from Wallsend on the Tyne to Bowness on the Solway Firth. The life of Hadrian in the Historia Augusta, written long afterward, says he built it to divide the Romans from the barbarians. Along its length stood a small fort every Roman mile with two turrets between each pair, and larger forts were soon added on the line itself.
The soldiers who manned it were mostly auxiliaries, recruited across the empire. Writing tablets from Vindolanda, a fort just south of the line, dating mostly from the years before the wall was built, show the life of this frontier: requests for leave, lists of supplies, a birthday invitation and a scornful note about the Britons, whom the writer calls Brittunculi, 'wretched little Britons'.
In the 140s Antoninus Pius pushed the frontier north to a new wall in Scotland, but within about twenty years the army was back on Hadrian's line.
The print stands us on the wall beside the sentry. Its big blocks fill the lower left corner, then the wall snakes away past a turret over red hills toward the low sun. Above the horizon the haze gathers into giant figures: shaggy-haired warriors with spears and long shields, faceless, rising over the land like weather. The soldier does not look up at them. He watches the hills.
