The scorpio was a light torsion catapult that shot heavy bolts, the field artillery of the Roman army. Its name means scorpion, after its sting. Julius Caesar tells how, at the siege of Avaricum in 52 BC, a scorpio struck down one Gallic defender after another as each stepped into the same place before the town gate. Later legions carried such machines as a matter of course.
The best technical description comes from Vitruvius, a Roman architect and military engineer who wrote On Architecture in the late first century BC and dedicated it to Augustus. In Book X he explains how to build machines that shoot bolts. The heart of each was the capitulum, a frame holding two vertical bundles of twisted sinew rope. An arm was set into each bundle. When the string was drawn back with a winch, the sucula, the bundles twisted further, and on release they snapped the arms forward. The bolt lay in a trough, the canalis. Vitruvius gives every measurement as a fraction or multiple of the bolt's length, so that a builder could make a machine of any size.
The plate is drawn in fine white line on deep blue, like an engineer's sheet. At the top the spring frame stands square and symmetrical, the coiled springs shown in zigzag hatching. Below, the side view stretches across the page on its stand, from the arrowhead at left to the spoked winch at right.
