The Roads of Rome: an illustration of the roads of the Roman Empire as glowing gold lines on black, converging on Rome

The Empire as a Web of Light

Roman roads began as military roads. The first great one, the Via Appia, was begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus to link Rome with Capua, and was later carried on to Brundisium on the Adriatic. As Rome expanded, new roads followed its legions: the Via Flaminia to the north, the Via Domitia through southern Gaul, the Via Egnatia across the Balkans.

The best roads were built in layers of stone and gravel, cambered so that water ran off, and paved with fitted blocks near towns. Milestones marked every Roman mile, about 1,480 meters. In 20 BC Augustus set up a gilded milestone, the Milliarium Aureum, in the Forum, and in later centuries the saying grew that all roads lead to Rome. The imperial courier service, the cursus publicus, used the roads to carry orders and news, changing animals at posting stations along the way.

The piece

Here the network becomes a field of light. The densest web covers Gaul, Spain and Italy; single bright threads trace the coast of North Africa and the Nile valley. The eye always comes back to the white star of Rome, where the lines gather like spokes into a hub.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
