Three Ages of Rome: an illustration of three maps of the Roman world in 264 BC, 44 BC and AD 117, with Roman lands in terracotta red
Three Ages of RomeAD 117
The Roman world · 264 BC, 44 BC, AD 117

From One Peninsula to Three Continents

The three dates mark turning points. In 264 BC a Roman army crossed to Sicily for the first time, and the First Punic War against Carthage began. Until then Rome had been an Italian power, ruling the peninsula through colonies and alliances. Within a century and a half it had provinces in Sicily, Sardinia, Spain, Africa, Macedonia and Asia.

In 44 BC Gaius Julius Caesar was killed in Rome on the Ides of March. By then Rome governed Gaul, which Caesar had conquered, most of Spain, the North African coast from Numidia to Cyrene, Greece and Macedonia, the coastlands of Asia Minor, and Syria. Egypt was still a kingdom under Cleopatra; Octavian, the future Augustus, annexed it in 30 BC.

In AD 117 the emperor Trajan died in Cilicia on his way home from a war in the east. He had conquered Dacia, north of the Danube, and had brought Armenia and Mesopotamia under Roman rule. His successor Hadrian soon gave up the new eastern provinces, so the empire was never larger than in that year.

The piece

The design is spare: no labels but the dates, set in quiet capitals beside each map. The eye moves down the sheet and watches the red spread, from a small boot of land to a band around the whole sea.

Size guide

Find the right size

This piece, to scale, above an 84-inch sofa. Pick a size, or a format and frame above, and the wall follows.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
