The peristyle takes its name from a Greek word for a colonnade running all the way around. In the larger houses of Pompeii and Herculaneum it enclosed a garden behind the atrium, with dining rooms and bedrooms opening onto the covered walks. Columns were often stuccoed and painted, plain red on the lower part of the shaft and white and fluted above, as here.
These gardens were planted with care. Excavations led by the archaeologist Wilhelmina Jashemski found the cavities left by roots in the volcanic ash, and with them evidence of fruit trees, flower beds and hedges. Water was the luxury. Once the town had an aqueduct, owners set bronze and marble statuettes around their basins to spout jets of water, and portrait busts on pillars, called herms, among the plants. A pair of bronze deer once stood in the great garden of the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum.
The picture sets us under the colonnade, between two red-and-white columns that frame the garden like a stage. A band of blue and red meander mosaic runs along our feet. From there the box hedges lead the eye along the gravel walks to the first fountain, where the bronze boy and the deer pour water from either side, then on to a second basin and a marble table at the far end. The pomegranate on the left and the busts on their pillars keep watch.
