A Roman army on campaign ended each day by fortifying a camp, castra in Latin. Surveyors went ahead to mark out the site. The soldiers dug a ditch, threw the earth up into a rampart topped with stakes, and pitched their tents inside to a fixed plan. Polybius described the camp of his own day in Book VI of his Histories, and the Jewish historian Josephus, who saw the legions in Judaea, compared a camp to a city raised in a moment.
This plate follows a later Latin treatise, On the Fortification of Camps (De munitionibus castrorum), usually dated to the first or second century AD. Its author is unknown, though it has long been linked with the name Hyginus. It names the parts shown here: the porta praetoria facing the enemy and the porta decumana at the rear, the left and right gates at the ends of the via principalis, the via quintana behind the headquarters, and the two halves of the camp, the praetentura in front and the retentura behind.
The plan is drawn in white line on blueprint blue, framed by a rounded rampart. The eye goes first to the praetorium in the middle, then out along the streets to the four gates. Hundreds of small tent squares fill the blocks, a picture of order on a scale that is easy to forget.
