The numbers on this plate come from a short Latin treatise on laying out a marching camp, known as De munitionibus castrorum and attributed to an author now called Pseudo-Hyginus. Its date is disputed, with suggestions from the late first to the early third century AD. It counts a century as eighty men in ten tents of eight, and a cohort as six centuries. The first cohort, it says, had double the numbers.
Each tent group, the contubernium, shared a leather tent on campaign and a pair of rooms in barracks. Each century was led by a centurion, who carried a vine stick as his badge and his instrument of punishment. Tacitus tells of a centurion nicknamed 'Bring another' for the sticks he broke on soldiers' backs. Vegetius, writing around AD 400, says centurions wore their helmet crests across the head so their men could recognize them. On Trajan's Column, standard-bearers wear animal skins over their helmets.
The plate reads like a lesson in multiplication. Three soldiers stand above, each named in English and Latin. Below them, a row of eight red dots becomes ten clusters of eight, then six red blocks, then the full legion, with the larger first cohort set apart in darker red. A line at the foot reminds the reader that these are paper strengths; real legions in the field were often smaller.
