The Roman legion of the Second Punic War is known above all from Polybius, a Greek statesman who lived in Rome after 167 BC. In Book VI of his Histories he describes a legion of 4,200 infantry and 300 cavalry. Its men were sorted by age and wealth: 1,200 light-armed velites, 1,200 hastati, 1,200 principes and 600 triarii.
The velites were the youngest and poorest. Polybius says they carried javelins, a sword and a round shield, and that some covered their plain helmets with a wolf skin so their officers could pick out the brave. The hastati and principes carried two throwing spears, the pila, with a short sword and a tall curved shield. Most wore a small bronze plate over the heart; the richest wore mail. The triarii, the oldest, kept the long thrusting spear. Each of the three heavy classes fought in ten maniples, and Livy records the Roman saying that things had come down to the triarii when a battle was going badly.
The plate reads from top to bottom like a lesson. The four figures stand on one ground line, each with an English and a Latin name beneath, and the eye moves from the bare-legged skirmisher to the gray beard of the veteran. Below, the same men become blocks of red, darker red and black, the second line staggered to cover the gaps in the first. The source line at the foot names Polybius and Livy.
