The Eagle: a painting of a Roman eagle-bearer in an animal pelt raising a golden eagle standard above legionaries at dusk
The Eagle
The Roman legion · Dusk

The Eagle Above the Ranks

From the time of Gaius Marius, the eagle, or aquila, was the emblem of every Roman legion. Pliny the Elder says Marius made it the single standard of the legions in 104 BC. It was usually shown with spread wings, often gripping the thunderbolt of Jupiter, king of the gods. In a permanent fortress it was kept in the shrine of the headquarters building, and soldiers treated it with something close to worship.

Its bearer, the aquilifer, held a position of real honor. Tombstones of eagle-bearers survive, showing them proudly holding the standard. Ancient writers tell of eagle-bearers who led at the decisive moment. Julius Caesar writes that when his men hesitated to jump from the ships into the surf off Britain in 55 BC, the eagle-bearer of the Tenth Legion leapt down first and called on the others to follow unless they wished to betray the eagle to the enemy. They followed.

The piece

The painting is seen from below, from among the soldiers. The standard-bearer stands at the center in mail, a small round shield on his back and an animal pelt over his helmet and shoulders. His raised arm and the shaft of the standard draw the eye straight up to the eagle, gleaming against a deep blue sky. Behind the ranks, a band of orange marks the setting sun along the hills. Mist covers the ground, and the spear points rise out of it like a forest.
