Roman Italy: an illustration of Roman Italy in flat poster colors, with the Alps, Rome, Milan, Naples, Brindisi, Sicily and red roads
Roman Italy
Italia · the imperial age

The Homeland of the Empire

By 264 BC Rome ruled the Italian peninsula south of the Po valley, and in the following two centuries it took in the north as well. After the Social War of 91–88 BC, most free Italians received Roman citizenship, and Italy became the privileged homeland of the empire, free of the land tax paid in the provinces. Augustus divided it into eleven regions, which Pliny the Elder lists one by one.

The roads on the map follow the great highways. The Via Appia, begun in 312 BC, ran south from Rome and was later carried on to Brundisium, where travelers took ship for Greece. Neapolis, founded by Greek colonists, kept its Greek language and customs long into the imperial age. Mediolanum, once a Celtic town, became an imperial capital in the late third century and remained the western emperors' main seat until 402. Sicily, taken from Carthage in 241 BC, was the first Roman province.

The piece

The style is flat and graphic, like a mid-century travel poster: no shading, just blocks of color and clean black outlines. The eye comes down from the red Alps, through Milan and along the roads to Rome, then follows the road across the south to the heel of Italy and the sea.

Size guide

Find the right size

This piece, to scale, above an 84-inch sofa. Pick a size, or a format and frame above, and the wall follows.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
