Most of this family tree is Greek. The Romans matched their own gods with the gods of Greece and took over Greek myth with them, so that Jupiter took on the stories of Zeus and Juno those of Hera. The genealogy follows Hesiod's Theogony and Homer: Saturn, who the Romans said ruled Latium in a golden age, married his sister Ops, and their children were the great gods of the next generation.
The poets did not always agree, and the plate shows where. In Homer, Venus is the daughter of Jupiter and Dione; in Hesiod she was born of the sea foam, sprung from Caelus, and a dotted line marks that version. Minerva sprang from Jupiter's head, though Hesiod names Metis as her mother. Ovid has Juno bear Mars alone, and Hesiod says the same of Vulcan. Pluto, lord of the dead, and Bacchus, son of the mortal Semele, are named without portraits because they are not among Ennius's twelve.
The bottom band joins the gods to Rome's own story as Livy tells it. Aeneas, son of Venus and Anchises, leads to Ascanius, the kings of Alba Longa and Numitor, then to Rhea Silvia, the Vestal who named Mars as the father of her twins, Romulus and Remus. By tradition, Rome was founded in 753 BC.
The plate is set on deep red like the wall of a Roman house, with each god in a round portrait carrying a classical attribute: Jupiter's oak wreath, Minerva's crested helmet, Mercury's winged hat, Diana's crescent and quiver. The eye moves from Jupiter and Juno outward to their children, then down the line of Mars to the twins.
