In the first century BC and the first century AD, the Bay of Naples was the favorite resort of rich Romans. Generals, senators and emperors built villas along its shore, from Baiae and Misenum to Pompeii, Stabiae and Surrentum. The geographer Strabo says the bay was lined with towns, houses and gardens in such an unbroken succession that it looked like a single city.
Romans dined reclining, and in summer they liked to do it outdoors. Houses in Pompeii had masonry dining couches built in the garden, often under a vine pergola, sometimes with a fountain or a pool between them. Pliny the Younger describes one at his Tuscan villa: a couch of white marble shaded by a vine on four slender columns, with water spouting from beneath it into a basin. The heavier dishes were set on the rim, he says, and the lighter ones floated around in vessels shaped like boats and birds.
The picture seats us at the open end of the couches, where the servers came and went. The mosaic floor, a red and blue sunburst framed by waves, leads the eye to the white table and the bright jet of the fountain, and from there out between the columns to the sea. The red and blue of the cushions and the floor return in the water and the flowers, so the room and the view feel like one.
