The Masks of the Ancestors: a painting of a Roman funeral procession in the Forum, men in pale ancestor masks and togas walking before a purple-draped bier
The Masks of the Ancestors
The Roman Forum · Republican Rome

When the Ancestors Walked Again

Roman nobility rested on memory. Families whose members had reached the higher magistracies kept imagines, wax masks of those ancestors, in cupboards in the atrium of the house, each labeled with the man's offices and deeds. Pliny the Elder describes the faces linked by painted lines into family trees on the walls.

At the funeral of a distinguished man, Polybius explains, the masks came out. They were worn by men chosen for their likeness in height and bearing, dressed in the bordered toga of a consul or praetor, the full purple of a censor, or the gold-embroidered robe of a general who had celebrated a triumph. The rods and other signs of office were carried before them. At the Rostra in the Forum the masked figures sat in a row on ivory chairs, and a son or relative gave the eulogy, praising first the dead man and then each ancestor in turn, from the oldest down.

The piece

In the painting, the procession crosses the wet paving of the Forum from left to right, from the purple-draped bier to the horn players on the far side. The masks are the palest things in the picture: still, white faces among the living, with a temple and its columns rising behind them in the mist. In the foreground the crowd watches with their backs to us, so that we stand among them.
