The Forum by Moonlight: a painting of the Roman Forum at night under a full moon, with temples, columns and a lone torchbearer on the Sacred Way

The Roman Forum · c. AD 200

The Sacred Way After Dark

The Roman Forum was the center of public life in Rome for more than a thousand years. Through it ran the Sacra Via, the Sacred Way, the city's oldest and most famous street, along which triumphal processions passed on their way to the Capitoline Hill. Around it stood the Senate House, the Rostra where orators spoke to the crowd, law courts, shrines and temples.

By around AD 200, under the emperor Septimius Severus, the Forum was crowded with monuments of every age. On the Sacred Way stood the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, its porch carried on single-piece columns of green-veined cipollino marble. At the top of the rise, on the Velia, stood the Arch of Titus, celebrating the capture of Jerusalem in AD 70. Across the way was the round Temple of Vesta, restored by the empress Julia Domna after the great fire of AD 191, where the Vestal Virgins tended the city's eternal flame.

At night the Forum emptied. Rome had no public street lighting, and anyone out after dark carried a torch or lamp, or had a slave carry one.

The piece

The painting looks straight up the moonlit street. Cold blue light falls on the paving and the marble, and only two warm lights break it: the fire inside the round temple on the right and the torch of the lone walker heading away from us. The green columns on the left, the statues on their tall columns and the arch at the end of the road wait in the stillness as clouds drift past the moon.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
