The Empire in Mosaic: an illustration of a map of the Roman Empire in AD 117 laid out as a stone mosaic, with dolphins, fish, a ship and a rope border

The Roman Empire · AD 117

An Empire Set in Stone

Mosaic was one of the great Roman arts. Floors of villas, baths and townhouses from Britain to Syria were laid with tesserae, small cubes of stone and glass, set in mortar to make patterns, gods, hunting scenes and sea creatures. Sea scenes with dolphins and fish were especially popular, and the twisted rope border appears on floors across the empire.

The Romans also made public maps. Pliny the Elder says that Marcus Agrippa, the general and friend of Augustus, planned a map of the whole world, which was completed after his death and displayed in a portico in Rome. A later mosaic map of the Holy Land survives in a sixth-century church at Madaba in Jordan. This design imagines what a map of the empire might have looked like on a Roman floor, showing it at its height under Trajan, from Britain and Spain to Dacia, Egypt and Mesopotamia.

The piece

Every shape is built from tiles: the coastlines step in tiny squares, the rivers run as dark blue lines through the cream, and the colors of the empire shift slightly from tile to tile, as real stone does. The eye goes first to the blue of the sea, then to the leaping dolphins, and finally to the small gold star of Rome.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
