The Empire at Its Height: an illustration of the Roman Empire in AD 117 in deep red on an antique map, with Latin labels and an eagle cartouche

The Roman Empire · AD 117

One Red Empire Around One Sea

Marcus Ulpius Traianus, the emperor Trajan, ruled from AD 98 to 117. He conquered Dacia, north of the Danube, in two wars that ended in AD 106, and the spoils of the war helped pay for his great forum in Rome. In the same year his governor of Syria annexed the Nabataean kingdom as the province of Arabia.

From AD 114 Trajan turned on Parthia. He made Armenia a province, took the Parthian capital Ctesiphon and, according to Cassius Dio, reached the shore of the Persian Gulf, where he is said to have wished he were young enough to follow Alexander to India. Revolts broke out behind him. He died in Cilicia in August AD 117, and his successor Hadrian gave up the new lands beyond the Euphrates.

The piece

The map holds the moment before that retreat. The red runs from the Atlantic coast of Spain to Armenia, and down the Tigris to the Gulf. Latin names mark the great regions: HISPANIA for Spain, GALLIA for Gaul, ITALIA, DACIA, SYRIA, AFRICA for the lands around Carthage, AEGYPTUS for Egypt, and ASIA, the old name of the province in western Asia Minor, here set across the whole peninsula. Beyond the frontier the parchment is left bare, with hatched mountains and thin rivers running into a world Rome never ruled.

Size guide

Find the right size

This piece, to scale, above an 84-inch sofa. Pick a size, or a format and frame above, and the wall follows.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
