The Frontiers of Rome: an illustration of the frontiers of the Roman Empire around AD 130 as a glowing orange line on a dark map

The Roman frontiers · c. AD 130

A Chain of Lights Around an Empire

When Hadrian became emperor in AD 117, he gave up Trajan's new provinces beyond the Euphrates and turned to holding what Rome already had. The Historia Augusta says he toured the provinces and, where the frontier was not a river, shut it off with palisades of great stakes set deep in the ground. In Britain he ordered the wall that bears his name. In Germany a fenced line, the limes, linked the Rhine and the Danube.

Most of the frontier was not a wall at all but a river or a desert edge, watched from forts and towers and served by roads. The army that guarded it numbered about thirty legions, roughly 150,000 legionaries, with about as many again in auxiliary units. Dacia, north of the Danube, was the great exception, held as a salient until the 270s. Today long stretches of these lines, from Hadrian's Wall to the Danube, are listed by UNESCO as the Frontiers of the Roman Empire.

The piece

The map strips away everything but the border. The land is soft charcoal on black, the provinces unmarked, and the only light comes from the chain of red points around the edge. The eye follows it from Britain down the Rhine and along the Danube, around the bulge of Dacia, east to the Black Sea and down toward Arabia, and only then finds the small white dot of Rome far inside.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
