Roman Egypt: an illustration of the Nile in Roman Egypt from Thebes to the delta, with Memphis, Alexandria and the Faiyum
Roman Egypt
Aegyptus · 30 BC–AD 641

The Granary on the Nile

After the deaths of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII in 30 BC, Octavian, soon to be Augustus, made Egypt a Roman province. It was governed not by a senator but by a prefect of equestrian rank, and Tacitus says senators could not even visit without the emperor's permission. The reason was grain: Egypt's harvests, shipped from Alexandria to Italy, were vital to the food supply of Rome.

Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, was the second city of the empire, a great port and a center of learning. Its lighthouse on the island of Pharos was counted among the wonders of the world. Upriver, Roman visitors came as tourists to see the pyramids and the Colossi of Memnon at Thebes; in AD 130 the emperor Hadrian and the empress Sabina made the journey. Egypt stayed Roman, and then Byzantine, until the Arab conquest in the 640s.

The piece

The map is a soft, sunlit illustration. Sand and cliffs fill the deserts on either side, so that the green line of the river is the only living thing on the land. Small sailboats move along the Nile, and the eye travels from the cataract at the bottom, past the temples of Thebes, to the delta spreading out like a fan into the blue sea.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
