The centurion was the professional heart of the legion. Polybius, describing the army of the second century BC, says the men chosen as centurions should be steady and dependable rather than reckless, men who would hold their ground and die at their posts. Under the empire a centurion might serve for decades, moving between legions across the provinces, on many times the pay of an ordinary soldier.
Three things marked him out. His helmet carried a crest set crosswise, which Vegetius says let the men recognize him in battle. He carried a staff of vine wood, the vitis, both as a badge of rank and to enforce discipline. Tacitus tells of a centurion named Lucilius who broke so many staffs on his men's backs that they nicknamed him Bring Another, and killed him in the Pannonian mutiny of AD 14. Decorated centurions also wore their awards on a harness of straps over the armor: round embossed medals called phalerae.
The painting is a half-length portrait set against a dark camp, where tents and a single torch glow faintly behind him. Firelight falls across the bronze of the helmet and the deep folds of the red cloak. His harness carries five phalerae, showing a lion's head, an eagle, a laurel-crowned head, a winged Victory and a second eagle. He does not look at us. His eyes are fixed on something outside the frame, and his hand keeps the knotted staff close.
