The Danube formed the northern border of the Roman Empire along much of its course, from the Alps to the Black Sea. Along it stood legionary fortresses such as Carnuntum, Vindobona, now Vienna, and Novae, linked by forts, watchtowers and a river fleet. The towers stood close enough for signals to pass from one post to the next.
The river was both a wall and a road. Trajan bridged it at Drobeta for his Dacian Wars, and the spiral reliefs of Trajan's Column in Rome show soldiers building camps and watchtowers along its banks. Winter brought its own danger. When the Danube froze, raiders could cross on foot. Cassius Dio describes Roman soldiers fighting the Iazyges on the ice during the wars of Marcus Aurelius, bracing their feet on their shields to keep from slipping.
The painting places us on the near bank, at the foot of a log watchtower where a fire burns in an iron basket. A sentry in a dark cloak stands with his back to us, a curved rectangular shield resting at his feet. The eye follows his gaze across the water to the far shore, where a long wall with towers encloses rows of tents lit from within. Their reflections stretch across the river in lines of gold. Plates of ice lie along the bank, and the snowy hills behind the camp fade into a sky crowded with stars.
