Roman Britain: an illustration of Roman Britain in red with London, York, Chester and Bath, Hadrian's Wall, and Caledonia and Ireland beyond
Roman Britain
Britannia · AD 43–410

The Province at the Edge of the Empire

Gaius Julius Caesar landed in Britain in 55 and 54 BC, but the conquest began only in AD 43, under the emperor Claudius. Within a generation Rome had put down the revolt of Boudica in AD 60 or 61 and pushed into Wales and the north. Tacitus says his father-in-law Agricola defeated the Caledonians at Mons Graupius around AD 83 and that a Roman fleet sailed around the island.

Rome never held the far north for long. Around AD 122 Hadrian ordered a wall from the Solway to the Tyne, 80 Roman miles long. His successor Antoninus Pius advanced to the Forth and Clyde about AD 142 and built a turf wall there, but it was given up within about twenty years. Eboracum and Deva were legionary fortresses, Londinium grew into the largest town, and Aquae Sulis drew visitors to its hot springs and the temple of Sulis Minerva. Roman rule ended around AD 410; according to Zosimus, the emperor Honorius told the cities of Britain to see to their own defense.

The piece

The map is drawn in the manner of an old county atlas, with hatched hills and a crisp inked coastline. The red of the province stops hard at the wall, and the pale land of Caledonia rises beyond. Small red squares mark towns and forts along the roads, and the eye runs down from York to London along the straight lines the legions laid.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
