The Augur: a painting of a veiled Roman augur raising his curved staff toward a flight of birds above a misty Rome at dawn
The Augur
Above Rome · At dawn

Asking the Gods for a Sign

The college of augurs was one of Rome's great priesthoods, and a place in it was a high honor; Cicero, Pompey and Mark Antony were all augurs. The augur's badge was the lituus, a staff curved at the top. Livy describes an augur using it to mark out the templum, a defined space of sky and land in which signs would be watched for.

On the Arx, the northern summit of the Capitoline Hill, stood the auguraculum, a fixed place for observing. The augur faced his marked quarter of the sky and watched which birds appeared, from which side and how they flew, and judged whether the signs were favorable. Taking the auspices was formally the right of the magistrate, with the augurs as the experts in the law of signs. An unfavorable sign, or a flaw in the ritual, could postpone an election or annul a law. Cicero, himself an augur, wrote a treatise on divination that weighs the case for and against it.

The piece

The painting places the augur at the edge of a stone platform, square-cut posts marking its corners. His raised arm and staff lead the eye up into a long, sweeping line of birds that curves across the dawn sky toward the low sun. On the left a temple crowned by a four-horse chariot rises over the cliff; below, temples and a bridge emerge from the fog, and the city has not yet woken.
