The World of Ptolemy: an illustration of Ptolemy's world map with Europe, Asia and Africa on a curved grid, ringed by wind heads on a starry blue sky
The World of Ptolemyc. AD 150
Claudius Ptolemy · c. AD 150

The Known World, Measured

Claudius Ptolemy worked in Alexandria in the second century AD, under Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Besides his famous works on astronomy, he wrote the Geography, a guide to drawing the world. It lists about 8,000 places with their latitudes and longitudes and explains how to project a round earth onto a flat sheet.

Ptolemy's world runs from the Fortunate Isles, the Canaries, in the west to China in the east. Some of his errors became famous. He made Taprobane, Sri Lanka, many times too large, and joined Africa to east Asia with an unknown southern land, turning the Indian Ocean into a closed basin. He also stretched Asia too far east, a mistake often said to have encouraged Columbus. The Geography was rediscovered by Byzantine scholars around 1300, translated into Latin in Florence early in the 1400s, and printed with maps from 1477.

The piece

The design follows those Renaissance maps: a fan-shaped grid outlined in gold, lands in olive and ochre with small brown mountains, and seas in deep lapis blue. Around the edge, the winds of classical tradition blow in from the clouds. The eye starts at the familiar Mediterranean in the upper left and travels east to the edge of what anyone in Rome knew.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
