Portus: a painting of the Roman harbor of Portus crowded with merchant ships, a lighthouse burning at the harbor mouth
Portusc. AD 115
Portus, near Ostia · c. AD 115

Where Rome's Bread Came Ashore

Rome depended on grain shipped from Egypt, North Africa and Sicily, but the mouth of the Tiber at Ostia was shallow and exposed, and large ships often unloaded at Puteoli on the Bay of Naples instead. In AD 42 the emperor Claudius began a new harbor about three kilometers north of Ostia, with two great curving moles reaching out into the sea. It was completed under Nero.

Its lighthouse stood on a man-made island. Suetonius and Pliny the Elder say it was built on the sunken hull of the giant ship that had brought from Egypt the obelisk now standing in Saint Peter's Square, and Suetonius adds that it imitated the Pharos of Alexandria. The outer harbor was still not safe: Tacitus records some 200 ships wrecked inside it in a storm in AD 62.

Trajan added an inner basin, a hexagon nearly 360 meters on each side, ringed with warehouses, temples and offices, and linked by a new canal to the Tiber. Grain was stored here and moved upriver to Rome on towed barges. Today the hexagon survives as a lake near Fiumicino airport.

The piece

The painting looks down over the inner basin from high above the quays. Moored ships fill the foreground, their sails still set, and porters carry cargo across the docks. The eye follows the blue water out between the long moles to the lighthouse, its fire and smoke rising above the open sea.
