Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus had been the leading Roman of his generation. He cleared the Mediterranean of pirates in a single season in 67 BC, defeated Mithridates of Pontus, reorganized the East, and celebrated triumphs over three continents. He joined Caesar and Crassus in their political alliance and married Caesar's daughter Julia. After her death in 54 BC and the death of Crassus the next year, the two men drifted apart, and in 49 BC Pompey led the Senate's side in the civil war.
Beaten at Pharsalus in August 48 BC, he sailed for Egypt. Off Pelusium, the Egyptian general Achillas and a Roman officer, Lucius Septimius, took him into a small boat and struck him down as he rose to step ashore. Plutarch says Pompey drew his toga over his face and endured the blows with no more than a groan. When Caesar reached Alexandria soon after and the head was brought to him, Plutarch says he wept over Pompey's seal ring, engraved with a lion holding a sword. Pompey's ashes were later carried home to Cornelia, who buried them at his villa in the Alban Hills.
The painting sets the meeting on the water. Caesar stands high at the gilded prow of his ship, in a steel-blue cuirass and red cloak, above a great golden eagle. His outstretched palm and averted eyes say everything. Below, in a small boat, a bearded courtier holds open the white cloth, helped by a young attendant. Behind them, the Pharos lighthouse rises over the harbor and its sails in the hazy gold light.
