An Ordinary Day Under the Mountain
Pompeii was already an old town when Rome took it over. Founded by Oscan-speaking Italians, it sided against Rome in the Social War, was besieged by Sulla's forces, and became a Roman colony in 80 BC. By the first century AD it was a busy market town of perhaps 10,000 to 12,000 people, with a forum, temples, baths, an amphitheater and street after street of houses, workshops and bars.
Its streets were built for wet and dirty weather. Raised sidewalks kept feet dry, and large stepping stones let people cross without stepping down into the roadway, while cart wheels passed through the gaps between them; the ruts are still there. An aqueduct fed dozens of public fountains on the street corners. A strong earthquake in AD 62 or 63 damaged the town, and repairs were still under way when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Pliny the Younger, who watched from across the bay, left the only eyewitness account. Ash and pumice buried the town, and excavation began in 1748.
The piece
The print looks straight down the street to the mountain. The stepping stones sit in the foreground like a threshold, the shop fronts and their jars lead the eye along both sides, and a single figure walks away from us toward Vesuvius. Nothing in the picture is alarming. That is its weight: few in Pompeii seem to have thought of the mountain as a danger.
