Pompeii began as a town of the Oscan-speaking peoples of Campania and became a Roman colony in 80 BC, after it sided against Rome in the Social War. By the first century AD it was a prosperous place of perhaps ten to twelve thousand people, with a walled circuit of about three kilometers, a port near the mouth of the Sarno and rich farmland on the slopes of Vesuvius. An earthquake in AD 62 or 63 damaged much of it, and repairs were still under way when the mountain erupted in AD 79. Pliny the Younger's letters describe the eruption, which buried the town under meters of ash and pumice.
The map picks out the public buildings in roughly their true places. The forum, with the Temple of Jupiter at its north end, lies in the southwest. The Large Theater and the smaller covered theater sit together in the south. In the southeast corner is the amphitheater, built about 70 BC and the oldest surviving stone amphitheater, with the great exercise ground, the Large Palaestra, beside it. Tacitus records a riot there in AD 59 between Pompeians and visitors from Nuceria.
The map is set inside a frame borrowed from the town's own painted walls: a field of deep red, a black border, slim golden candelabra with birds perched on top. The town floats in the middle of the red field, seen as a bird would see it. The eye finds the green squares of gardens, the bowl of the amphitheater, then lifts to the mountain on the horizon.
