The Atrium, Pompeii: an illustration of a Roman atrium with red and black painted walls, a marble pool under an open roof and a garden through the doorway
The Atrium, PompeiiBefore AD 79
Pompeii · before AD 79

Where the Rain Came In

The atrium was the main hall of a Roman town house. Visitors entered from the street through a narrow passage and stepped into this tall room, open to the sky at its center. The roof sloped inward around the opening, called the compluvium, so that rainwater ran off the tiles, through spouts often shaped as lion heads, into a shallow basin in the floor, the impluvium. From there it drained into a cistern below. Vitruvius, writing under Augustus, describes several kinds of atrium and how to proportion them.

By the basin often stood a stone table. The scholar Varro calls it the cartibulum and says bronze vessels were set out on it. Examples on carved animal supports survive at Pompeii, preserved with the rest of the town by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Beyond the atrium lay the tablinum, the master's reception room, and behind it the colonnaded garden.

The piece

The picture is built on that line of sight. From the mosaic threshold in the foreground, a rug of blue and red framed by black meanders, the eye passes over the still pool, which mirrors the cypresses and columns beyond, and through the great doorway into the bright garden and its fountain. The strong Pompeian red and black of the walls hold the room in shadow, so that the sky above and the garden ahead seem to glow.

Size guide

Find the right size

This piece, to scale, above an 84-inch sofa. Pick a size, or a format and frame above, and the wall follows.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
