Gaius Plinius Secundus, known as Pliny the Elder, was a writer, a naturalist and the commander of the Roman fleet at Misenum, at the northwestern tip of the Bay of Naples. On the day Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, his sister pointed out a cloud of unusual size and shape rising across the bay. Pliny first ordered a light ship made ready to take a closer look. Then a message arrived from a woman named Rectina, whose villa lay at the foot of the mountain, begging for help.
According to his nephew, Pliny the Younger, he changed his plan and launched the warships, quadriremes, to rescue people along the crowded coast. He steered straight toward the danger, dictating notes on what he saw as hot ash and pumice fell on the decks. When his helmsman urged him to turn back, he is said to have replied that fortune favors the brave, and made for Stabiae and his friend Pomponianus. He died on the shore there the next day. His nephew believed the fumes overcame him; some modern scholars think his heart failed.
The painting catches the ship mid-crossing. Pliny stands at the stern in a red cloak, arm stretched toward the coast, while a companion takes notes beside him. Low sunlight breaks in from the left, but the rest of the sky is ash, crossed by lightning. Pumice floats all around the hull, and more ships sail ahead toward the burning shore.
