The Pantheon stands in the Campus Martius in Rome. The first temple on the site was built by Marcus Agrippa, the friend and son-in-law of Augustus, and his name is still carved across the porch. The building we see today was completed under the emperor Hadrian; brick stamps date its construction to about AD 113 to 125, so work may have begun under Trajan. In AD 609 it became a church, which is why it is the best-preserved large building of ancient Rome.
Its porch is held up by sixteen monolithic columns of granite, gray and rose, quarried in Egypt and shipped to Rome. Cassius Dio says that Agrippa had wanted to place a statue of Augustus inside and name the building for him, and when Augustus refused, set statues of Augustus and of himself in the porch instead. The porch roof was once carried on bronze beams; Pope Urban VIII had the bronze removed in 1625. Beyond the doors lies the rotunda, its concrete dome about 43 meters across, still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, open to the sky through the oculus at its crown.
The picture is all about that passage from shade to light. Rows of columns march in from both sides, and the patterned marble floor of circles and squares runs straight to the doors. Through them, framed in dark bronze, the beam of sunlight drops from the oculus to the floor of the rotunda, the brightest thing in the picture and the place every line leads.
