The Oculus: an illustration of the Pantheon's coffered dome with a beam of sunlight from the oculus falling on a lone robed figure
The Oculusc. AD 125
The Pantheon, Rome · c. AD 125

One Circle of Light

The Pantheon was a temple to all the gods. Marcus Agrippa, the right-hand man of Augustus, built the first one on the site in the 20s BC. After fires, the building that stands today was raised under Hadrian, and the dates stamped on its bricks point to work in the 110s and 120s AD. Hadrian kept Agrippa's name on the front, as the Historia Augusta says he did on other buildings he restored: the inscription still reads that Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, consul for the third time, made it.

The dome is built of concrete, made lighter toward the top by mixing in pumice and other light stone, and lightened again by five rings of sunken coffers. At the crown is the oculus, roughly 8 meters (about 27 feet) wide and open to the sky. Rain falls straight through, and the floor slopes gently to drains. In AD 609 Pope Boniface IV consecrated the building as a church, which is a large part of the reason it survives almost intact.

The piece

The print stands on the floor and looks up. The beam slants down from the oculus across the coffers and lands as a bright pool on the floor, where one robed figure has stopped. Columns, niches and the great apse opposite hold the dark. In a picture made of one deep blue, the light reads almost white, and the eye follows it all the way down.

This piece, to scale, above an 84-inch sofa. Pick a size, or a format and frame above, and the wall follows.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
