The Pantheon stands in the Campus Martius in Rome. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, the closest ally of Augustus, built the first temple on the site around 27–25 BC. It burned in AD 80, was restored under Domitian, and burned again around AD 110. The building standing today was begun late in the reign of Trajan and completed under Hadrian, around AD 125; stamps on its bricks help date it. The Historia Augusta says Hadrian restored buildings under the names of those who first built them, and the inscription on the porch still credits Agrippa, consul for the third time.
Behind the porch of Egyptian granite columns lies a round hall roofed by a concrete dome about 43 meters across, as wide as the room is high. An open eye at the top, about 9 meters wide, is its only window. It remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. Cassius Dio thought the name came from the dome's likeness to the heavens. Holes in the pediment suggest it once held a bronze eagle within a wreath. In AD 609 Pope Boniface IV consecrated the building as a church, and it has been in use ever since.
The painting stands at the end of the colonnaded square in front of the temple. A low sun on the left lays long shadows across the pale paving and lights the dome gold. The eye climbs from the figures walking toward the porch, up the columns of gray and rose stone, to the eagle in its wreath and the great curve of the dome against the sky.
