Mars was the god of war and, for the early Romans, also a guardian of fields and flocks, and his festivals framed the season of fighting. In March the Salii danced and the war trumpets were purified; in October, when the armies came home, weapons were purified at the Armilustrium and the October Horse was run.
The details come from scattered sources. Festus describes the race of two-horse chariots on the Campus Martius and the sacrifice of the right-hand horse of the winners. Polybius, criticizing the Greek historian Timaeus, mentions that the Romans killed a war horse with a spear on a fixed day each year, a custom Timaeus tied to the fall of Troy. The horse's head, decorated with loaves of bread, became the prize in a struggle between the men of the Sacred Way and the men of the Subura; the winners displayed it on the wall of the Regia or on the Mamilian Tower. Ovid speaks of a horse's blood, usually taken to be this one's, given out from Vesta's altar for the purification rites of the Parilia in April.
The painting gives us the race itself, not the sacrifice. The eye follows the lead chariot, dark horses wreathed in leaves, its driver leaning into his whip, while the other teams spray mud behind. The crowd fills the foreground, close enough to touch. On the right the priests stand at their altar, and across the river the city rises on its hill in the autumn mist.
