The Nika Riots: a painting of Empress Theodora pointing toward Constantinople in flames as Justinian sits troubled on a palace terrace
The Nika RiotsAD 532
Constantinople · AD 532

The Empress Will Not Flee

The Nika riots of January AD 532 were the most dangerous uprising Constantinople ever saw. Trouble began at the chariot races in the Hippodrome, where the Blues and the Greens, usually bitter rivals, united against Justinian's government under the cry Nika, meaning win or conquer. Over several days much of the city center burned, including the old church of Hagia Sophia, and the crowd crowned Hypatius, a nephew of the former emperor Anastasius.

Procopius, who was in the city, says the emperor and his council were preparing to escape by ship. He gives Theodora a speech in which she refuses to flee, saying that kingship makes a fine burial shroud. Historians debate how much of the speech is Procopius' own work, but the decision was real. Justinian stayed. His generals Belisarius and Mundus led troops into the packed Hippodrome, and Procopius reports more than thirty thousand dead.

The piece

The painting divides the picture in two. On the left is the burning city, flames and smoke reflected in the dark harbor where ships lie at anchor. On the right is the court, still and lit by a single torch. Theodora stands between them, her outstretched arm leading the eye from the palace to the fire. Justinian's bowed head and the soldiers' watchful faces wait on her.
