Neptune, God of the Sea: an illustration of Neptune with a golden trident rising from mosaic-patterned waves, with white horses, dolphins and three ships
Neptune, God of the SeaMyth
Off Sicily · Virgil's Aeneid

The God Who Calmed the Storm

Neptune was an old Italian god, perhaps first linked with fresh water, who came to be identified with the Greek sea god Poseidon. Much of his imagery, including the trident and the horses, came to Rome with that identification. His own festival, the Neptunalia, fell on July 23, in the driest weeks of summer, when Romans are said to have built shelters of leafy branches.

He mattered to a people who learned the sea the hard way. Rome built its first great war fleets in the First Punic War, and later commanders courted the god openly. Sextus Pompeius, who ruled the seas around Sicily in the 30s BC, is said to have called himself a son of Neptune and worn a sea-blue cloak. After the naval victories over Sextus and then over Mark Antony, Marcus Agrippa built a basilica to Neptune in Rome.

Livy adds a link to the horses. He says the games at which Romulus' men seized the Sabine women were held in honor of Neptune Equester, Neptune of the horses.

The piece

The illustration runs from left to right like a wave. White horses with manes like spray break out of the surf, and the water is laid out in bands of cobalt spirals, gold acanthus and meanders, as in a floor mosaic. Dolphins slip through the bands. The eye travels with them to the god at the right, crowned in gold, his blue mantle fastened with a scallop shell, and then out to the quiet line of ships on the horizon.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
