Modern scholars often call Musonius Rufus the Roman Socrates, and like Socrates he taught by conversation rather than by writing books. What survives are short lectures in Greek, written down by a pupil named Lucius and preserved by the anthologist Stobaeus, together with a number of sayings.
His teaching was practical. He held that philosophy is training in good conduct, and he cared more for daily habits than for theory: plain food, simple clothing, hard work and self-control. He argued that daughters should be taught philosophy as sons were, since women share the same reason and the same capacity for virtue, and he described marriage as a partnership of complete companionship and mutual care.
He had courage as well. Tacitus says that in AD 69, during the civil war, he joined envoys sent to the advancing army of Vespasian's general Antonius Primus and lectured the soldiers on the blessings of peace, to their open ridicule. Epictetus remembers that Rufus spoke so pointedly that each listener felt someone had told him of his own faults.
No ancient portrait of Musonius is known, so this likeness is imagined. The portrait is drawn in close cross-hatching that darkens toward the shadowed side of the face and the heavy folds of the cloak, while the lit brow and steady eyes hold the center.
