The Mithraeum: a painting of a blindfolded initiate kneeling in a starlit Mithras temple before a priest in red and a raven-masked figure
The Mithraeumc. AD 200
A mithraeum · c. AD 200

Under a Painted Sky of Stars

The god Mithras had Persian roots, but the mystery cult that Romans practiced in his name seems to have taken shape in the Roman world itself, and scholars still debate how much it owed to Iran. Its members, all men, met in groups of a few dozen in a mithraeum: a narrow chamber, often underground, with raised benches along both sides and the cult image at the far end. The philosopher Porphyry says such a cave stood for the cosmos. More than a dozen mithraea have been found at Ostia alone, and others lie beneath churches in Rome.

Because the cult kept its secrets, most of what we know comes from archaeology and from Christian writers who opposed it. Jerome lists the seven grades: Raven, Bridegroom, Soldier, Lion, Persian, Runner of the Sun and Father. A late fourth-century writer known as Ambrosiaster describes initiates with their eyes bound and members who imitated birds and lions. Wall paintings in the mithraeum at Capua show a kneeling, blindfolded initiate with a guide standing behind him.

The piece

The painting follows the length of the chamber toward its glowing heart. The kneeling initiate is lit from above, the Father's hand on his head, the Raven dark and still beside him. The eye moves up past the altar lamps to the scene of Mithras and the bull, with the torchbearers on either side, a raven and a lion watching from their niches, and the stars on the vault overhead.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
