Guardian of Rome's Legions
Mars was the most honored god of the Roman state after Jupiter, and his cult was among the oldest in the city. He had his own high priest, the flamen Martialis, and a college of priests, the Salii, who danced through Rome each March carrying sacred shields. By tradition, one of those shields fell from the sky in the reign of King Numa, and eleven copies were made so that no thief could tell which was the true one.
The Greeks identified him with Ares, but the two gods were not alike. Ares was a troubling figure in Greek myth and had few temples. Roman Mars was a guardian and a father. Cato the Elder records a farmer's prayer to Father Mars to keep disease and storm from the fields, the flocks and the household, a reminder that he watched over the land as well as the army. The army mustered on the Campus Martius, the Field of Mars, and in 2 BC Augustus dedicated a great temple to Mars Ultor, Mars the Avenger, in his new forum.
The piece
The picture is built on one strong diagonal. The god's vermilion cloak, patterned with meanders, waves and laurel sprays like a mosaic border, pours down the left side into banks of cobalt and white cloud. Against the bare cream ground on the right, his gilded armor and lion-headed arm guard catch the eye first. Then the gaze runs down the blade to the small, orderly lines of legionaries on the horizon.
