Marcus Antonius, Mark Antony, was triumvir with Octavian and Lepidus and, in the end, Octavian's great rival. In 31 BC he and Cleopatra VII were defeated at Actium, and both died the next year. Plutarch counts seven children of Antony by three wives, although his union with Cleopatra, which began in 41 BC, was never a marriage in Roman law. In 30 BC only Antyllus, the eldest, was put to death. Octavia, whom Antony had divorced in 32 BC, brought up the rest with her own children.
Through her, Antony's blood reached the throne. Her daughter Antonia the Younger married Drusus the Elder, Livia's son, and bore Germanicus and the emperor Claudius; Germanicus's son was Caligula. Her elder daughter, Antonia the Elder, married Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus; their son Gnaeus married Germanicus's daughter Agrippina the Younger, and their son was Nero. Of Cleopatra's children by Antony, Alexander Helios and Ptolemy Philadelphus vanish from the record. Cleopatra Selene became queen of Mauretania as wife of Juba II, and her son Ptolemy was put to death by Caligula in AD 40.
The plate is set on deep red like a wall in a Roman house, with eight portrait roundels after coins: Antony, Octavia, Cleopatra and her daughter Selene, Ptolemy of Mauretania, and the three emperors in gold. The eye starts with Antony at the top and follows the line from his marriage to Octavia, the longest on the plate, through her daughters to Claudius, Caligula and Nero. A side note recalls one more daughter, Antonia, born to an earlier wife.
