Mare Nostrum: an illustration of the Mediterranean in watercolor, labeled Mare Nostrum, with ships and Rome, Carthage, Athens and Alexandria
Mare Nostrum
The Mediterranean · Roman era

The Sea at the Center

Rome was not born a sea power. It built its first great war fleet around 260 BC, in the First Punic War, to fight Carthage for Sicily. The victories at Mylae in 260 BC and the Aegates Islands in 241 BC made Rome master of the western sea, and over the next two centuries it took the eastern shores one by one, from Greece to Asia Minor and Syria.

By the time of Augustus the whole coastline was Roman or ruled by Rome's client kings; even before that, Caesar and Sallust called it simply "our sea." Fleets based at Misenum and Ravenna kept the peace. Merchant ships carried Egyptian grain to Puteoli and Ostia, Spanish oil and wine to Rome, and marble, spices and travelers everywhere. Pliny the Elder records a voyage from the Strait of Messina to Alexandria in just seven days.

The piece

The map is all water and light. The land is left in warm ochre and green, crossed by soft mountain shading, while the sea darkens to deep blue in its basins and lightens over the shallows. The great letters of MARE NOSTRUM float across the middle, and small ships lead the eye from Carthage to Alexandria and up toward Rome.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
