Marcus Aurelius on the Danube: a painting of Marcus Aurelius writing by lamplight in a tent at night, a snowy army camp and river seen through the opening
Marcus Aurelius on the Danubec. AD 172
The Danube Frontier · c. AD 172

Notes to Himself by Lamplight

From the late 160s AD the empire's Danube frontier was under heavy pressure. Germanic and Sarmatian peoples, among them the Marcomanni and the Quadi, crossed the river, and in one raid reached northern Italy. Marcus Aurelius, emperor since AD 161, spent most of the following years on campaign, based at camps and fortresses such as Carnuntum, near modern Vienna. He was still at war on the Danube when he died in AD 180.

During these years he wrote the work we call the Meditations. Its Greek title in the manuscripts means simply 'to himself'. It is a private collection of reminders in the Stoic tradition: to do one's duty, to accept what cannot be changed, to be patient with others, to remember that life is short. Two short notes in the text name a place. One says it was written among the Quadi, on the river Granua, a tributary of the Danube; the other says at Carnuntum.

The piece

The painting imagines one of those nights. Marcus sits at a folding camp table in a dark cloak, his head in his hand, pen on the page, a single flame lighting his face. Around him are the signs of his office laid aside: the gilded cuirass on its stand, a small shrine, a chest marked with the eagle. Through the open flap the cold blue world of the camp waits, with snow, watchfires, guards and the dark river beyond.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
