Marcus Aurelius: a painting of Marcus Aurelius writing by lamplight in his tent, a snowy Danube army camp at night beyond the open flap
Marcus AureliusAD 161
Emperor · AD 161–180

Writing by Lamplight on the Frontier

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus ruled Rome from AD 161 to 180, at first jointly with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus. His reign was hard. A plague brought back from the East by the army spread through the empire from AD 165, and in the late 160s Germanic and Sarmatian peoples crossed the Danube, one invasion reaching as far as Aquileia in northern Italy. The Marcomannic Wars kept the emperor on the frontier for most of the next decade.

There he kept a notebook. Written in Greek and addressed to himself, it is now known as the Meditations. Two of its books carry a note of where they were written: among the Quadi on the river Granua, and at Carnuntum, a legionary fortress on the Danube. The notes are Stoic exercises, reminders to do his duty, to accept what he cannot change and to treat others with patience. Cassius Dio, who lived through the reign, judged that Marcus was a good man who did not meet with the good fortune he deserved.

The piece

The painting divides itself between warm and cold. On the left everything is lamplight: the folds of the red cloak, the hand on the page, the empty armor standing guard behind him. On the right, through the opening of the tent, lies the blue night of the camp, with snow, tents, banners and small fires beside a half-frozen river. His eyes have left the page and turned toward that cold. The lamp flame on the table is the brightest point in the picture, and everything else is arranged around it.
