Marcus Aurelius wrote the Meditations as private notes to himself, probably during his long campaigns on the Danube in the 170s AD. The work has no title from his hand; the manuscripts call it simply 'To Himself.' He wrote in Greek, the language of philosophy in his day, and he never meant it to be published.
Book 10 is one of the most urgent. Again and again Marcus tells himself that time is short, that death is near and that the only thing worth doing is to act well now. Section 16 compresses that into a single command. For a Stoic, philosophy was not a debate about virtue but the practice of it, and Marcus often reminds himself that the point of all his reading is to live better.
The translation on this piece is George Long's Victorian version, published in 1862 and still widely read, and it follows the Greek closely. The familiar short form of the line, telling the reader to waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be, is the same sentence in a freer translation, not a different saying.
The design sets a white marble bust of Marcus against a deep night-blue ground, in the bearded type of his later portraits. Light from the upper left falls on the thick curls and the round brooch pinning his cloak, and his gaze leads across to the words in the open dark.
