The Maison Carrée, French for "square house", was the temple of the forum of Nemausus, the Roman city that is now Nîmes. It is a classic design of the age of Augustus: six Corinthian columns across the front, a deep porch, and half-columns set into the walls of the inner chamber along the sides and back.
Its bronze dedication was torn away long ago, but in 1758 the local scholar Jean-François Séguier read it from the holes that had held the letters. It honored Gaius and Lucius Caesar, the grandsons Augustus had adopted as his heirs, and called them "princes of youth." Lucius died in AD 2 and Gaius in AD 4. The temple survived because it was never left empty: over the centuries it served as a public hall, a house, a stable and a church. Thomas Jefferson, minister to France in 1785, made it the pattern for the Virginia State Capitol, and in 2023 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The print restores the setting the temple has lost: a paved square closed by long colonnades, with a hill and a tower beyond, much as the Roman Tour Magne still stands on the hill above Nîmes. The sun is low on the left, so the columns throw long blue shadows across the paving. The eye goes from the steps to the deep porch, then along the side wall with its half-columns, and finally to the lone walker, who makes the whole building something you look up at.
