The aquila, the silver or gilded eagle, was the sacred standard of the Roman legion. Pliny the Elder writes that Gaius Marius made the eagle the single emblem of every legion in 104 BC. It was kept in a shrine in the camp, carried into battle by a chosen soldier called the aquilifer, and treated as something close to holy. To lose it was a deep humiliation for the legion and for Rome.
The most famous losses came in AD 9, when Arminius destroyed three legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus in the Teutoburg Forest. Florus tells that one eagle-bearer tore his eagle from its pole and hid with it in the bloody marsh rather than give it up. Tacitus records that one lost eagle was recovered among the Bructeri in AD 15 and another from the Marsi in AD 16. Cassius Dio says the third was retaken from the Chauci in AD 41. Augustus had already won back, by negotiation in 20 BC, the eagles Crassus lost at Carrhae.
The painting centers on the standard itself, planted upright in the black water like a grave marker. A pale light falls from above onto the eagle's spread wings, and its reflection runs down into the swamp. Around it the forest is dead and broken, the trees reduced to stumps and spikes. Look down and the story arrives in pieces: a red shield on its side, an empty helmet, a javelin sinking into the reeds. The raven on the right is the only living thing in view.
