In the autumn of AD 9, Publius Quinctilius Varus was leading three legions, the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth, toward their winter quarters when they were ambushed in the forests of Germania. The trap was laid by Arminius, a prince of the Cherusci who had served with Roman forces and whom Varus trusted. Over several days of rain and broken ground, the column was cut to pieces. Varus took his own life, and all three eagles were lost. Suetonius says Augustus would beat his head against a door, crying out to Varus to give him back his legions.
Six years later Germanicus, the nephew and adopted son of Tiberius, led an army to the battlefield. Tacitus describes what they found: Varus' first camp, a half-fallen rampart, whitening bones lying where men had fled or stood their ground, and skulls fixed to tree trunks. The soldiers buried the remains under a mound, and Germanicus laid the first turf himself. Since the late 1980s, finds at Kalkriese in Lower Saxony have convinced many historians that part of the fighting happened there.
The print sets one small figure at the bottom of a tall red sheet. Black trunks rise past him like the bars of a gate, and the mist between them thickens into soldiers: dozens of faceless giants in helmets, their spears lost in the canopy. The eye climbs from the lone legionary to the largest of them at the center, then back down to the pale path he has yet to walk.
