There is no single agreed list of Roman emperors. This plate follows the traditional count used in the standard modern lists: the emperors usually reckoned legitimate, co-emperors included, and after the division of the empire in AD 395 only the emperors of the West. Usurpers and rival claimants are left out, and the plate names some of them so the rule is plain: Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, Postumus, Magnentius and Magnus Maximus. By that count there were eighty-four emperors between 27 BC and AD 476.
The regnal years follow one rule throughout. A co-emperor's years run from his own proclamation as Augustus, so Commodus is dated from AD 177 and Honorius from AD 393, not from the deaths of their fathers. Augustus is dated from 27 BC, when the Senate granted him the name Augustus. The list closes with Romulus Augustulus, deposed in AD 476, while a sub-line notes that Julius Nepos, driven from Italy in 475, held Dalmatia until his death in 480.
Six gold medallions in the manner of Roman coins head the columns: Augustus, Marcus Aurelius, Maximinus Thrax, Diocletian, Julian and Romulus Augustulus. Founders of dynasties, and Diocletian for the Tetrarchy, are set in gold. The eye runs along the time line first, from the sparse ticks of the first century to the dense cluster of the Crisis, then drops into the columns. The source line names the ancient historians behind the list, from Suetonius and Tacitus to Zosimus and Jordanes.
