The Pharos stood on the island of Pharos at the mouth of Alexandria's harbor. Work began under Ptolemy I Soter and was finished under his son Ptolemy II, around 280 BC. Strabo, who knew Alexandria under Augustus, says it was dedicated by Sostratus of Cnidus for the safety of sailors. Modern estimates put its height at more than 100 meters (over 330 feet), which would make it one of the tallest buildings of the ancient world.
Rome knew it well. Julius Caesar fought for control of the island in 48 BC and described the tower in his account of the Civil War. Pliny the Elder admired it, while warning that its fire, seen from far off, could be mistaken for a star. Under Roman rule, coins struck at Alexandria showed the lighthouse, sometimes crowned with statues whose identity is still debated. It survived into the Middle Ages until earthquakes brought it down, and in 1477 its stones went into the fort of Qaitbay, which stands on the site today.
The print looks at the tower from the open sea. Its stages climb in narrowing blocks of pale stone, pierced with small windows, to the lantern, where the fire burns and its smoke drifts across the night sky. A figure holding a trident crowns the summit, as in many modern reconstructions. Below, the reflected light runs down the water toward a lone rower, a small human measure against the tallest light of the ancient world.
